Increases cultivated area and avocado consumption in Spain

Coinciding with World Avocado Month, the World Avocado Organization has announced that this year 2020 will break records of avocado consumption in our country. According to its forecasts, this will increase by 20% compared to the previous year.

Avocado has earned the fashionable food stand, not only for its many properties, but for being placed as a “comforting food”. This term refers to highly caloric foods that provide us with healthy nutrients, such as monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. Avocado triumphs for its versatility, flavor and numerous benefits.

The World Avocado Organization, also known as WAO, celebrates in June, for the third year in a row in our country, World Avocado Month, a date that shows the growing success of this food worldwide. As a great novelty, Russia joins this celebration, being one of the markets with the most potential for avocado. Other countries that already appreciate this product and have marked in their calendar this celebration are Finland, Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands. The most important supermarkets in these countries have collaborated with this initiative, to promote their consumption among the population.

Spain is by far the main European producing and exporting country of this fruit. 85% of the 14,000 hectares cultivated are concentrated in Andalusia (in the provinces of Malaga and Granada) and in the Canary Islands, places where the ideal subtropical conditions are given for the fruit to grow healthy and tasty. Such is the gastronomic success of this product that in the Valencian Community for years does not cease to increase the cultivated area and in other areas of Huelva, Cádiz and Almería have already started to bet on this crop, giving a new way to its most sandy arable land.

Many farmers are betting on this interesting product, the success of which lies in stable temperatures, sunlight, light-sandy soils and the absence of frost. In addition, controlled irrigation is essential for the plant to grow properly.

This fruit already has its official website in Spanish (https://avocadofruitoflife.com/ ), promoted and created by the WAO. It shows nutritional values, data on its properties and many ideas to progressively incorporate it into our healthy diet. Other countries such as Peru, South Africa and Kenya, three of the largest exporters of this fruit worldwide, guarantee the distribution of this product for the entire old continent.
